NMMA received a grant from the U.S. Coast Guard to produce a video and set of PSAs that
encourages life jacket use. In an effort to make these PSAs stand out from typical safety
announcements, cameo appearances by a variety of celebrities are featured. Zons taped
segments with teen pop sensations Nick and Aaron Carter in Key West, FL, B.A.S.S. founder Ray
Scott in Montgomery, AL, and actor John Amos from NBC's "The West Wing" in Marina Del Ray, CA.
"The celebrities were chosen because of their appeal to different boating groups we were
trying to target with these announcements," stated Zons. He adds: "Nine out of ten boating
related drownings occur in inland lakes and streams, most within just a few feet of safety
and most involving boats less than 20 feet in length. 80% of those who drown in boating
accidents were not wearing life jackets. We want to change that. If we can get just one
more person to put on their life jacket after watching these PSAs, we will have accomplished
something."
The PSAs started airing in the Chicago market in June and nationally on a variety of
cable networks in July.
